The Opening of Khust Castle: History and Legends

Khust Castle is not only stone walls and picturesque ruins of a fortification atop a hill, but also a centuries-old history, shrouded in mysteries and legends that are still preserved in every stone. Once a Hungarian royal fortress, it is now an architectural monument of national significance, dating back to 1090. It served a defensive role on the salt route, protecting it from numerous raids and military conflicts, and repeatedly became the arena for bloody battles and political intrigues. In those times, it was a strategic center that guarded trade routes through Transcarpathia, and its powerful walls were considered impregnable.

The history of Khust’s bastion is thorny and, of course, holds many secrets that, unfortunately, will never be revealed to the public. However, according to preserved historical sources, it is known for certain that the castle-fortress belonged to the princes of the Galician-Volhynian state. This means that this stronghold is a guardian of the Ukrainian nation and identity, etched into its walls and history. Sadly, not everyone understands the significance of Khust Castle, often seeing it only as ordinary ruins with a historical footprint, of which there are many in Ukraine. However, this castle has its uniqueness: it was irreversibly destroyed by the combined efforts of nature and man, and it is unlikely that it will ever be restored.

Walking through the traces of history, one gets the impression that the castle was deliberately erased from the face of the earth under various circumstances. In fact, Khust’s fortified complex was destroyed by a lightning strike that hit the storage where gunpowder was kept. If we believe the sources, this happened in 1766. After the tragedy, there were attempts to restore the fortress, but due to its profitability, the local authorities abandoned the idea, giving the surviving parts of the castle to the local community. As a result, the castle was dismantled for building materials. It is a pity, and a shame, as they say: “We have what we have.”

Over time, many legends have emerged around Khust Castle. One of the most famous tells of underground passages connecting the castle with the Tisa River. According to the legend, treasures of local rulers, as well as precious items brought from distant lands, were kept in the vaults of the tunnels. It is said that brave explorers who tried to find these passages either disappeared without a trace or returned exhausted, without answers to their questions.

Another legend speaks of the ghost of a white knight who, according to witnesses, sometimes appears near the castle gates at night, when the moon is full. It is said that this is the soul of a brave warrior who once died defending the castle and never found peace.
