Sit down at the history table: Halytskyi Castle

In the heart of the western Ukrainian regions, where the Carpathian peaks embrace the ancient city of Halych, lies the pearl of the past - the Halych Castle. Its surviving walls, like silent witnesses and reflections of the greatness and spirit of past eras, tell about the greatness of princes, exploits and vicissitudes of turbulent times. The fortification structure of defensive significance once and its ruins, as an architectural monument of national significance of Ukraine today, was built in the middle of the 14th century. But it is worth noting that in historical sources the citadel is mentioned in 1119 as a rather well-fortified military structure. Of course, in the initial account, the castle had a wooden structure, and only later it was reconstructed into a stone and fairly strong foundation, which resulted in a well-fortified and stable fortress of the Galician princes (XII-XIV centuries).

And although no one today can say who and under what circumstances the princely wooden castle in Halych was destroyed, only guesses, the situation regarding the reconstruction of the castle-outpost is completely different. The general reconstruction of the defensive structure dates back to the middle of the 14th century and lasted almost a whole century. In this historical period, Galicia and Western Volhynia became part of Poland. It is worth noting that the Halytskyi Castle was considered one of the largest buildings in all of Galicia. Dozens of cannons were installed along its entire perimeter, and of course, many of the firearms that were already quite widely used at that time. It was surrounded on three sides by a rampart and crowned by five defensive towers. So the citadel was amazing!

Over time, Halytskyi Castle has survived long sieges, repeated devastation and destruction, and then reconstruction again. The Turks and Tatars, the Ottomans and, of course, the Cossacks led by Bohdan Khmelnytsky wanted to conquer the castle in the city of Halych. Numerous military confrontations in different periods and the political situation always had consequences for the building. In a word, whoever could not conquer, destroyed. So the fate of Halytskyi Castle was thorny and far from simple. Over time, the military situation, as well as the political one, underwent changes. In the end, the castle was once again rebuilt, but the building lost its defensive significance. In 1767, a kind of "smart" governor was found in the society, who gave an order to dismantle the walls of the castle and use the materials in the construction of city buildings. As a result and, as the people say, "we have what we have", despite its historical weight, its numerous reconstructions and restorations, only the ruins of the castle have been preserved to the modern generation. So, when you have the opportunity, visit your heritage, which, albeit partially, has been preserved for you and your descendants.
